Hormonal impacts on skin, hair & nails.
Have you ever noticed that your skin, hair and nails drastically change throughout the month?
If so, you may be struggling with hormone imbalances.
Skin:
Hormonal acne happens because of hormone fluctuations, especially testosterone. A rise in testosterone may stimulate the excessive sebum production from the sebaceous glands. When this sebum combines with dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells, it results in clogged pores and acne.
During the first few days of your cycle, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels are low. As a result, you may notice your skin looking drier and duller. If hormone levels stay persisting low in their fluctuation some individuals report more skin sensitivity rough texture and rashes.
Hair:
A thyroid imbalance can also impact changes in hair texture. Your hair can feel dry, coarse, and brittle. It can also contribute to hair loss.
An imbalance in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone can cause hair to thin. During times in the cycle where estrogen levels are higher the hair becomes stronger and shinier.
Nails:
Nails are made of a protein called keratin, if estrogen levels decrease or persistently low this can affect production of keratin. During the cycle as levels dip- nails can feel dry, may crack, flake and break more easily.
Imbalances in vitamin D, parathyroid and thyroid hormones can cause nails to change texture, shape and become weak and soft.
